I AM INSPIRED BY PATTERNS, SYSTEMS OF ORGANIZATION AND COMMUNICATION, TYPOGRAPHY, THE VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF INFORMATION, AND THE SUBLIME.

Born and raised on the coast of Maine towards the end of the analog age, I developed an affinity for the natural world at an early age. I loved to watch the patterns of birds flying, trees undulating in the ocean breeze, and boats floating unmoored in the waves. I also loved the inner workings tube amplifiers and car engines and electric drills from my father’s workshop, and I built forts and spaceships with Legos and Lincoln Logs. I come from a long lineage of school teachers, so one could say communication and digesting information was embedded in my DNA.

This curiosity of both how things work and the notion of nature as a form of communication led me to an undergraduate education focused on forms of communication: writing, visual theory, cultural history, and general communication. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from Western Washington University. I had an excellent education, developing skills in writing, visual communication through photography and design, and visual communication.

An unfortunate (or fortunate!) accident led me to an acupuncturist, and eventually was moved enough to return to school for Chinese medicine, obtaining a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine, Acupuncture, and Herbal Medicine. At that time, my design and communications business was booming and the internet was in its infancy. While the two professions seem like opposites, they are actually a perfect marriage. There’s a classical East Asian notion of “Doctor as Scholar”, or the best doctors are well rounded humans. I have continued to support the profession through acquisition of a broad range of skills and tools in my almost 20 years.

I’m a writer, photographer, and designer with a proficiency in Indesign, Illustrator, and office software, and a working knowledge of XD and Photoshop.

I have built websites for online educational courses and small businesses like medical clinics, hospitality businesses, and political candidates; designed print ads, technical diagrams, and tradeshow booths; developed and managed brands; designed and built books, articles, and magazines; created product packaging and marketing campaigns for herbal manufacturing companies; and designed and developed UX/UI for websites, LMSs, and other software environments.

I mostly build and develop websites using WordPress CMS, and Canvas and eLogic LMSs, with occasional development using other web-based SaaS solutions. I’m proficient in Dreamweaver and knowledgable in HTML, CSS, and PHP. I am part of a network of and collaborate with software developers, educational technology designers, brand developers and managers, mobile app developers, and database engineers, among others.

I also have a well-rounded knowledge of current web development solutions and protocols with measured and tested experience in SEO, membership solutions, social media, online marketing, ecommerce, and integrating video and other multimedia integrations.

I am constantly educating myself on new technologies, protocols, and design and technology trends. To that end, and most importantly, I absolutely LOVE what I do, especially when learning and growth are a part of my path.

I currently live with two AMAZING cats and work in Portland, Oregon, while servicing clients from all over the United States and in Bali, Mexico, and China.
