SOFTWARE UX/UI DESIGN; FOCUS GROUP RESEARCH AND USER TESTING; BRANDING
2009, 2015-2016
The original software product was developed and released in 1992 as a desktop software application catering to healthcare providers and clinicians, researchers, and academics in the natural medicine fields (naturopathy, nutrition, East Asian medicine, chiropractic, etc.). This software provides a broad range of up-to-date diagnostic information, treatment protocols, drug and herb interactions, patient chart notes, articles and other resources.
The client initially approached me in 2009 to collaborate in an effort to design a new online version of the platform, including greatly expand the functionality and stack to include social elements, forums, robust messaging functionality, and tiered user-level access to content, in addition to updating and expanding the current content and UX/UI. I recruited in a small team to work with collaboratively to do user testing, focus groups, and present working mockups to collect data and better understand user behaviors and preferences. In addition, additional designers were recruited to the team since a wide range of coding and design skills were needed to execute such a vast project. Unfortunately the project continued to expand and the scope evolved constantly. Our goal was to release the minimum viable product, while continuing to build additional feature sets. The team was ahead of the curve of a number of technologies that were coming online at the time, but unfortunately due to the expanding nature of the project on the desires of the client, the resource cap was met and the client decided to shelve and revisit the project at a future time.
More recently, the client approached me again to assist in a visual redesign and minor UX/UI revision to the original software. Using some of the original assets and new assets, I have been working with a back-end software developer to re-envision the product to bring it online and eventually transform it into a mobile app.
